Why choose Roslyn's House?

WAPF Food

For snacks we serve organic fruits and vegetables, liver fritters, lox, sardines, dried whole anchovies and filtered water--inspired and influenced by the Weston A. Price Foundation.

Real Life Learning

No one at Roslyn's House will ever insist your child learn what a zebra looks like or memorize other animals they may never see. But everyone at Roslyn's House will point out bugs, ants, spiders, birds and any other creature that is actually a part of your child's real life. Toys at Roslyn's House follow the same theme-you will not find superhero costumes or princess dresses at Roslyn's House. Roslyn's House is about real life, the real life that young children yearn to understand and learn about--things like growing food, chickens, swimming, cooking and cleaning. Roslyn also stives to provide a mixed age environment.

Non-Toxic Environment

Though toxins are unavoidable, Roslyn does the best she can to keep them off her property. No pesticides are ever used in her yard and many plants are planted specifically to clean the air, especially the indoor ones. Roslyn's House has a Radiant Life 14-stage biocompatible water purification system, so any water used to drink at Roslyn's House is completely chlorine and fluoride free--make sure you taste it if you stop by! As soon as she can afford it, Roslyn's pool will be converted into a living pool. Roslyn's carpets are 100% wool and she does her best to limit the amount of plastic allowed into her house. Roslyn's House does not have wifi and eventually it will have a stone wall surrounding it that will limit the amount of cell phone radiation that can get through. Roslyn's House is a non-profit camp. All proceeds will be put back into the camp making it less toxic, more beautiful and more fun.

Truth

Adults at Roslyn's House never lie to children. Children are never required to lie either, such as saying "thank you" or "sorry" when they don't mean it. It is both surprising and beautiful how often children will use these phrases voluntarily.

Respect

At Roslyn's House your child will be treated with respect. We do not pick children up whenever we please or poke them to make them giggle; we always ask permission. We don't coerce children into doing things they don't want to do, order them around or distract them to keep them from feeling what they are feeling. We don't pressure them to participate in group activities and we don't use loud, exaggerated voices or big, fake smiles. We don't interrupt children in the middle of tasks that are important to them. We don't treat girls differently from boys or encourage them to play with gender specific toys. Roslyn's House does not have to strive to be gender neutral with the children, that is a natural part of respecting all individuals.

Overview

Roslyn's House is in the Tarzana area of Los Angeles. It is in a middle class neighborhood on a quarter of an acre. It has a pool, giant shade trees, seven different fruit and nut trees, a vegetable garden and soon it will have a chicken coop.

Roslyn's House has a full time landscaper who loves to work in the garden and loves to share his passion with young visitors. Roslyn's House has a full time housekeeper and cook who loves making gourmet healthy food and enjoys keeping things tidy, but she always has a minute if anyone would like to help her stir or sweep. Roslyn's House has a full time child care expert trained in the philosophies of RIE, AP and Montessori. When she is not overseeing meals and diapering, she loves to read to expand her knowledge base about children. Should any interested child come over, of course, she is always happy to stop what she is doing and connect. Roslyn's House also has special guests that change depending on the day of the week--swimming instructors who play in the pool, gymnastic instructors, dance instructors and basketball players who come to practice their skills, grandmothers who sit in a rocking chair and knit and teenagers who come to apprentice.

Roslyn's House is a lively place full of adults who have lives and purposes of their own that have nothing to do with the children--and yet have everything to do with the children. The parenting philosophy being practiced is based on modeling, respect and non-coercion. Children can do or not do any of the "activities" that have been designed for them. All of our "activities" are based on real life and give young children the opportunity to see and participate with adults living life.
